Greyhound Gathering – Talk About a Walk on the Wild Side
By Dixie Brunner
You’re strolling down the quiet, quaint streets of Kanab in mid-May. You’re looking at the storefronts, greeting people who pass by, gazing at the red rocks against the oh-so-blue sky, when your gaze is diverted by a long, skinny, slinky creature coming towards you. You stop. You tilt your head. You stare. As you stand there, you see that there isn’t just one of these creatures heading toward you, but multitudes of them!

You’ve come to Kanab during Greyhound Gathering. Hundreds of these elegant hounds take over the town in mid-May for a weekend of heavy petting. Hundreds of greyhound lovers travel from England, Canada and all over the United States to spend three days loving on their hounds.
“It’s a weekend of greyhound love,” explained organizer Claudia Presto. “These owners are in Kanab to demonstrate their love and respect for the breed, as well as for their own greyhounds.”
While their racing days are over, its obvious that the greyhounds have sped their way into the hearts of their owners.
This year, the 11th annual Greyhound Gathering invades Kanab on the May 14-16 weekend.
The festivities include: •Costumed Parade down Center Street •Blur of Fur Run, where hounds chase their humans down a grassy stretch, as Kanab police clock them with a radar gun. Forty mph is something to see. •Hikes through the red rocks of Kanab. •Fundraising with Live and Silent Auctions. •Drawings, Greyt Wheel of Fortune and more.
“We wouldn’t miss it for the world. We’ve come all 10 years,” says Jim and Cheryl Bedore from Phoenix.
